20.  GEORGE III SHERATON CHEVERET c1790
Christopher Malcomson          9am-5pm               $280

Cheverets were popular in the United Kingdom in the 18th century. In this elegant version of a satinwood George III Sheraton Cheveret circa 1790, there are two long drawers in the lift off  section. The lower section has a single main drawer under the writing surface and folds out to reveal a leather writing area. As a smaller form of the bureau, its uniqueness lies in its portability, or the ability to lift off the top and literally take it with you. The main table contains 'Greek key' inlaid bandings with rosewood moldings and the legs are square and tapered, characteristic of the Sheraton Period.  Veneer and marquetry greatly enhances any piece of furniture and students will learn how to veneer each component of the cheveret in exotic satinwood before construction. Learn how to make your own inlay bandings and create the 'Greek Key' designs to the writing surface.  Working from a prepared cutting list students will make the jointed drawers, hinge the fold over writing surface with its fine supporting slides and assemble this beautiful writing desk from the completed components.  These skills will open the door to the endless possibilities of marquetry and veneering that students can carry forward to their own projects.
