18. CREWEL EMBROIDERY - 17th CENTURY BED COVERLET

Crewel embroidery is a beautiful form of surface embroidery with a history extending back more than a thousand years. It is especially associated with the elaborate floral and scrolling designs popular in England during the late 16th and early 17th centuries, particularly during the reign of King James I.  In this workshop, students will create a miniature bed coverlet inspired by historic 17th-century Crewelwork. Working on linen twill, participants will learn a variety of traditional embroidery stitches and their variations while adapting them to a miniature scale.  The workshop will explore the history of Crewel embroidery, the difference between Crewelwork and Jacobean embroidery, and the distinctive characteristics of English and American Crewelwork. We will also discuss traditional threads, designs, stitching techniques, different styles of bed coverlets, and how to create a properly scaled pattern for a miniature bed.  Participants may use the instructor’s design or develop their own design using the information and guidance provided in class. Different methods for finishing the edges and constructing the completed bed coverlet will also be demonstrated.  The kit includes all essential supplies: linen twill, stretcher bars, needles, cotton and/or silk floss, easy-to-follow instructions, and additional materials needed for the project.  Students are encouraged to bring their own miniature bed to class or provide its exact measurements, so the coverlet can be fitted correctly.  Students are advised to bring their favorite sharp scissors, additional light, and a magnifier, if needed.
