32.  BUILDING AND DRESSING

A TUDOR BED

The  Tudor period in England and Wales began in 1485, with the reign of Henry VII and ended with the death of Elizabeth I in 1643.  It was an age of exploration, increased trade and a revived interest in art and architecture.  Country houses and castles ere built for a new emerging wealthy class.  While most of the population slept on straw mattresses on the floor, the Tudor bed was a symbol of ultimate luxury and considered a family heirloom.  It was characterized by heavy, intricately carved posts, usually made of oak, and an elaborate canopy.  Students will construct a Tudor bed which incorporates a paneled headboard and linenfold footboard.  Students will make a bedskirt, bedspread, pillows and canopy, displaying the traditional Tudor Rose pattern.  Students will learn about different glues, sewing methods, measuring and templates.  This is an intensive class, although quite suitable for beginners.  All materials will be provided, however, students are welcome to bring their own.  Bring pencil and paper in order to take notes.
