4.  THE SHOP OF CURIOSITIES
Eamonn O'Rourke
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday 9 am - 5 pm        $1160

This unique model is a lovely example of how some 14th century buildings grew and developed over hundreds of years to become the structures we can still see today.  One of the features you will recreate is a classic medieval exterior staircase and the typical jettying of the upper floors common in the later 15th century.  The timber framing and brickwork are reminiscent of styles of the 16th century. All in all, buildings such as this are still to be found across England in the 21st century giving you plenty of options to decorate in the period and purpose of your choice.  The Old Curiosity shop that stands today near Lincoln’s Inn Fields in London, is a ‘genuine fake’. It was a marketing ploy from the 18th century and had nothing to do with Charles Dickens. He referred to his Curiosity Shop as having been demolished long before he put quill to paper.  However, Dickens portrayal of the Old Curiosity Shop as ‘a dark, dusty and cluttered place filled with old treasures and strange objects’ was enough to inspire us to create this class for you to enjoy.  The workshop is available in both 1/12th and 1/24th scale, please indicate on the booking form which scale you would like.  The structure is designed to be ‘travel friendly’, each floor is removable and measures approx. 5” in height, the roof apexes are removable for transport in 1/24th scale. In 1/12th scale the structure is designed to be flat packed and reassembled at home. Both scales will fit into 2 large, airline approved suitcases. A removable stand will add approximately 2” to the height if assembled.  We have used some AI in the photos to enhance the lighting and assist with the props in order to give you some inspiration as to how you might finish your project, rest assured the rest of the work is all ours! We have shown the shop level of the model dressed as a Tudor leather merchants, a generic bookshop and a modern winebar to encourage you to use your imagination!

All supplies are provided by the instructor except
